Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) working hard at its anvil. This is one of the more impressive anvils I've seen over the years. The pecker brings the cones (in this case of Norway Spruce) to its anvil, to extract the seeds. Processed cones are discarded and dropped to the ground. This pile would be the leftovers from this winter.
